Press Release

Private Colleges and Universities have the Fourth Largest Private Sector Payroll in Pennsylvania

"Several years ago the Brookings Institution issued a report saying Pennsylvania policymakers should focus their attention on nurturing eds and meds since these industries were especially strong in the Commonwealth," said Don Francis, president of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), which conducted the study.  "Our economic impact report confirms the wisdom of that recommendation, for jobs at colleges, hospitals, and doctors' offices garnered three of the top four spots in payroll by a private sector industry in Pennsylvania."

"While I continue to believe that the greatest economic impact of our private colleges and universities is the human capital they develop for the Pennsylvania workforce," Francis said, "private higher education continues to grow in importance as an industry, as an employer, and as an engine of prosperity in towns throughout the Commonwealth."
